Now that we’ve fully entered spring, it’s time to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather—and what better place to do that than the idyllic J.F. Gregory Park located in Richmond Hill in Bryan County. Despite its less than mellifluous name, this 335-acre park offers an abundance of activities that can entertain the entire family.
Bring a picnic and enjoy hiking trails, biking trails, and a state-of-the-art children’s playground. For those who indulge there is fishing and canoeing available, and a birding tower. The Wetland Education Center, located in the rear of the park, offers an interactive educational experience about wetlands ecosystems and preservation. You can also stroll around the 10-acre lake and enjoy the wildlife.
For the history buffs in the group, there are several points of interest: the park was originally a rice plantation, subsequently bought by Henry Ford. Richmond Hill was his winter home for almost 25 years, and there is a restored Ford home located in the park. The Blue Star Memorial was built to honor all American soldiers who fought to defend their nation. There are marble slabs representing each war America has fought in the past 100 years. The park also holds one of the Georgia Civil War Heritage trails.
The covered Pavilion makes it ideal for the Company gatherings, birthday parties and family reunions. The local Army personnel at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield like to hold family days, company functions, holiday cooks outs due to its central location between both garrisons.
And for those who love food—the annual Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival is one of the largest seafood festivals in the southeast. Held in October, rain or shine the festival offers three days of incredible food, arts, exhibits, and live music.
