SAVANNAH IS RENOWNED FOR ITS ANTEBELLUM CHARMS, with cobblestone squares and historical homes. It’s awash in history, from the Siege of Savannah during the American Revolution to the famous Mercer Trial. There have been countless movies made, songs written, and stories told about Savannah and its romantic past, and it seems like everywhere you go you can feel the past pressing close.
In the Starland District, however, the future is here! Located on the south end of Forsyth Park and stretching to Victory Drive, visitors will find a vibrant, 35-block collection of mixed-use space; art studios, residential lofts, cafes, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and offices.
The Starland District was a thriving business community for the first part of the 20th century, later succumbing to abandonment mid-century when moving to the suburbs became trendy. The Victorian homes and commercial buildings fell into disrepair, with over 50% of them unusable. In fact, the area acquired a reputation for crime.
The concept of an art district was the brainchild of two undergraduates from SCAD with degrees in Historic Preservation. They conceived of a district that would not just revitalize several neighborhoods but restore the crumbling buildings to provide a real and functioning art community in Savannah. In 1999 the two secured financing to purchase the Starland Dairy and 20 surrounding buildings, and began make their dream a reality.
Today the Starland District is home to the James Beard semifinalist Back In The Day Bakery, one of the first tenants in the area. You’ll find up-and-coming professionals, students, and artists, and an art gallery in the dairy operated by Art Rise Savannah, a nonprofit organization that organizes the First Friday Art March, a monthly event that has helped increase awareness of the many charms to be found in the Starland District.
